Brain Food and Weight Loss

What is the most common reason that people become overweight? A
frequently asked question that we could argue about all day. In my
experience, one of the biggest contributing factors, if not the
biggest, is that people eat for emotional reasons.
Our brain protects us, both from physical pain, and emotional pain.
However, it will do this in ways that are familiar and well practised.
This will not necessarily be the ways that are most useful. When we
feel bad, our brain obviously doesn't like this and so it suggests
things that we could do to feel good. And if we have practised and
rehearsed using food to make us feel good, then our brain will
naturally suggest this as an option. Every time you eat you affirm your
existence on this planet - your survival and you release serotonin -
one of the brain's happy chemicals. Food is a very reliable way of
changing your state - biochemically you will experience some form of
change. Unfortunately, eating to change your state instead of eating
for fuel can, if done to excess, become a major source of obesity -
which in turn makes you feel bad emotionally and so the cycle begins.
Some people will fall into this pattern some of the time, others will
do it every time. But at the end of the day, if you want to make a
permanent and life enhancing change to your body and your physique, you
will need to learn new ways of changing negative emotions, whether
that's uncertainty, frustration, anger, depression, sadness, anxiety,
boredom or anything else, and take control of how you feel in healthy,
useful ways - from the inside.

I had a fantastic weekend at the FitPro Convention this week at
Loughborough where I went to University. I went to see some
extraordinary speakers and coaches, including world renowned strength
and health coach Charles Poliquin, and experts in human behaviour
including Nic Jarvis and Pete Cohen. All sorts of topics were covered.
In this post I'll be highlighting some of the tips, tricks and
practises discussed that relate to weight loss. These are in no
particular order:
The Number One Reason Why Women Don't Lose Weight...
...is...
They don't eat enough meat!
The Best Breakfast for Weight loss...
...is.....
Meat and nuts!
Most people have a carb fest at breakfast which sets your insulin in
totally the wrong direction. A lot of people don't like the taste of
meat for breakfast, but if you take enough fish oil (which is excellent
for fat loss anyway) you will notice that you tastes change and meat
for breakfast tastes good.
Fish Oil and Fat Loss
Fish oil switches on the genes that burn fat and switches off the genes
that store fat.
To Lose Weight You Must Hydrate
Dehydration increases cortisol output which in turn increases fat
storage. Plus dehydration of just 1.5% will result in a 10% reduction
in strength, so your workouts will suffer too.
If you want to lose weight make sure that you are drinking 0.6 ounces
per pound of bodyweight per day, or 37.5ml per Kg of bodyweight per
day.
Testosterone and Fat
The gene that regulates testosterone also regulates body fat. If you
lower your testosterone levels you increase fat storage. And what do
you need to make testosterone? Cholesterol. That's right, a diet that
is deficient in cholesterol is not healthy, we need it for T production
as well as for cell health.
Insulin and Fat
Most people are overly concerned about fat intake and fat gain. But
what really matters is INSULIN. People are overweight because of too
high insulin levels. The more you control your insulin, the leaner you
will become. This means cut out those starchy and high glycemic carbs!
Thyroid Function and Fat Loss
You are probably aware that they thyroid is involved in metabolism and
weight control. Two things that mess up your thyroid function include:
1. Fluoride (switch to a non-fluoride tooth paste)
2. Bromine - which is used to whiten cereals and grains

How to Stop Sabotaging Your Weight Loss
April 1, 2011
In my article on weight loss motivation I showed you how to give
yourself extraordinary levels of motivation to lose weight. However,
I'm sure that in the past, there have been times when you started out
with the very best intentions, but despite this, found yourself
straying off track and doing things that you know [...]

"Diets Don't Work..." Err Yes They Do!
March 31, 2011
This is one of my pet hates at the moment. If you haven't been living
in a cave for the past few years, you'll have heard some nutritionist,
dietician or trainer spout the "diets don't work" line. This is usually
immediately superseded with "what I'm going to show you isn't a diet,
it's a healthy, [...]

5 Gym Mistakes You're Probably Making
March 30, 2011
I see the following mistakes being made in the gym repeatedly, and no
doubt the culprits are probably confused about why they are not losing
weight. I even overheard one gym member last week say "exercise just
doesn't work for me, it doesn't help me to lose weight!" The following
mistakes are really common and [...]

5 Dieting Mistakes You're Probably Making
March 29, 2011
The following 5 mistakes will kill weight loss progress, yet they are
surprisingly common: 1. Eating too few calories Ok this one is a little
more well known, but crash diets are still really popular, so just to
re-emphasise, CRASH DIETS MAKE YOU FAT! If you eat too few calories
your body thinks that you [...]

How I Make My Clients Lose Weight
March 1, 2011
A lot of my clients come to me because they don't feel like they can
motivate themselves. They feel like they need someone else to make them
do it and that there will be financial penalties if they don't. And
they say to me: "I'm just not that motivated" or "I'm just lazy!" But
it's [...]

How To Eat Chocolate And Lose Weight
February 28, 2011
That's right, you can indeed eat chocolate and lose weight! Woohoo!
"How is that?" you ask. "Isn't chocolate high in calories? Isn't
chocolate high in sugar? Isn't chocolate high in fat?" Yes, yes and
yes. However, there are two very important reasons why you should eat
chocolate to lose weight. The first is psychological, the [...]

Should I Exercise On An Empty Stomach?
February 25, 2011
This is an idea that has gone in and out of fashion for quite a while
now. Some people swear by working out on an empty stomach, ascribing to
the theory that it will encourage their body to mobilise more fats
during the workout. Unfortunately this approach is misguided and will
hamper your weight loss [...]

Perfect Weight Loss
February 24, 2011
Is perfectionism keeping you overweight? All of us make mistakes from
time to time. Let's say that for whatever reason, you went off plan and
ate something you shouldn't have. We've all done it before. But how
have you typically responded to this in the past? Quite a common
response is to write the rest [...]

Find other ZORGIUM pages using your favorite search engine:
Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of
http://bing.com,
http://yahoo.com or
http://google.com.
Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.
ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
